Resembles Facebook. I prefer the way twitter like social media works with words being the main message.
If you have solid idea of donation request, you should get in touch with the developer. It will be good for everybody who use these apps. P.S. I'm not a developer but a user.
That's not the point of my comment. Sure I don't mind dropping few euros to support good software but the method of introducing this request is what's questionable here. Having a pop up on critical moment feels very dirty, though I'm sure it's just a coincidence.
No of course. But what I mean is, while getting apps that are free is great, it doesn't support the creator or help to further development on that app. Time costs money, and so does food and shelter. There is literally no such think as seriously free software. The cost is absorbed somewhere if the customers aren't paying.
Nice. But I'm just a user and just want to recommend these apps. The managing policy of these apps is up to him (developer, tibbbi on reddit) 😅
this isn't news to people who have used reddit for a long time, but it's nice to see media coverage. the media, after all, is the only way to get reddit's admins to do anything
Check out Mastohost. Completely managed instance. All yours, and you don't have to set anything up.
Really agree. Open source doesn't not mean it cost nothing to create. Supporting the software monetarily is the only way to keep it alive.
I have paid for them, as supporting the author is vital, but you can get them for free from @fdroidorg
Ah, of course, that's a good option. I'm not invested enough in Mastodon yet to start paying just for federation brownie points, but will keep it in mind in the future.
Buying paid version is the best solution.
Btw we've been mentioned on reddit
True, but then I'm responsible for its maintenance, having to keep up with updates, fix things when they break at exactly the most inconvenient moment, etc...
Excuse me for letting you misunderstand, I'm not a developer of these apps but a user. These apps have no internet permission, so we can use only caldav or webdav maybe. I don't know in detail because I never use syncing.
I've been using them for a while now but now they started to become a bit of a "begware"? Every once in a while it will have a pop up asking me to donate which is fine I guess but it's tends to do that in somewhat critical moments when I need to open up a gallery to show something to someone which is awkward.
Wow nice. That's a whole stack of default apps right there. Did you consider pitching them to phonemakers yet? I totally see how they could replace heavyweight Google apps in a Fairphone or Shiftphones. And thanks to the new EU ruling regarding unbundling Google apps from new phones, the simple ones could even fully replace Google's and save phonemakers the trouble of creating and maintaing their own.
How is cloud integration and synchronization? Do you promote self hosting or use file based backup?
A simple solution to this issue could be a change to the protocol to add account portability.
If I move from serverA to serverB, an ActivityPub message from serverA should inform all of my followers of the change so that their server automatically unfollow the serverA account and follow the serverB one.
This way mastodon.social could preserve its role of entry point while people could easily move out of there when they start to understand and enjoy the fediverse as a whole.
I don't think that (at least for now) mastodon.social constitute an actual centralization issue.
I'm there since a couple of years and somewhere in the course of this time I was silenced, without notification (so that I don't know why) but since most of my contacts are on different instances I didn't notice any issue till recently.
IMHO, this proves that federation works quite well.
Here you can find features requests.
OK - looks like it's pencilled in for 0.5.0 - thanks
After learning the basics of Vim I find I get better when thinking; "there has to be a faster way to do this." After some searching I almost always find the answer and then become just a little bit more efficient in the best text editor ever created :D
yup, exactly :)
With the cost of creating your own instance so low, and the absolute freedom and security that provides, I don't see why relying on mastodon.social is necessary at all. This is kind of the whole point of federation. Create your own island, and you can still talk to anyone, while you remain in control of everything. It doesn't get better than that.
